Ultimately, my paintings are a visual record of an unplanned dialogue between myself and a blank canvas. I begin working without a final vision in mind: I allow texture, color and structure to emerge organically.
My abstract paintings reflect the expressionistic energy and refined color sensibility influenced by Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Wolf Kahn, and Mark Rothko.
A consistent theme throughout my work is the atmosphere I see in the world around me. I usually develop a visual language that is taken from ordinary life in Seattle. I try to create a sense of weather and temperature through an exploration of the relationship between space and color.
Recently, my creativity has been changing from non-representational abstract to semi-abstract. I spend most of my time working in acrylic. Paint and physical collaging have carried over into surface experimentation: I combine printing techniques with mixed media, layering textures such as crackle paste, charcoal, and traditional Korean hanji paper.
Through these methods, I strive to convey a certain ambience and emotionality—despite the lack of tangible subject matter. Abstract painting has always been a means of personal expression for me, especially as I continue to find new ways to do so.
